SSMs

Selective Study Modules provide a perfect opportunity to sample any career ideas you might have. There are two SSM modules in the first, second, third and fifth year. In the fourth year you will have one SSM to complete over four weeks.

The range of topics provided by the Medical School is greatly varied and so can provide the opportunity for you to choose an SSM that could benefit your career decisions or to explore new areas in Medicine. Think carefully about your career options and if you wish to explore these further, especially during the pre-clinical years, then a SSM might be a great way to test these in a clinical setting.

It is worth reviewing the different aspects of the SSM and the content. SSMs might be able to help with early career decisions such as an Intercalated Degree. If you are considering one of the intercalating degrees then it might be worth having an SSM on your CV which relates to the topic. It is also worth reviewing the activities that you might be taking part in, i.e. presentations, audits, essay writing skills and research or clinical experience as these might expand your skills base.

Plus you have the opportunity to self-organise an SSM in a topic of your preference so the number of possibilities is infinite. With a self-organised SSM you will need to think about the aims and objectives. Once again the content of the SSM might be an opportunity for you to develop or practise a skill. You can also organise your own SSM.
