At Medical School

A key aim of this web site is to help you make the link between the training opportunities that exist within your medical degree and your expanding knowledge of the many and varied career paths open to you as a qualified doctor.

As noted here, this is important for at least the following reasons:

  • The Foundation Programme [the two-year programme of general training which forms the bridge between medical school and specialist/general practice training] provides an opportunity for you to experience a variety of specialties and healthcare settings;
  • The Foundation Programme [and increasingly undergraduates programmes] is founded on learning objectives that are specific and focused on demonstration of clinical competencies and also generic competencies and attributes [these include team working, the use of evidence and data, time management, communication and IT skills];
  • As a qualified doctor you will be expected to demonstrate professionalism primarily through a commitment to your ongoing and future learning and development.

Your time at medical school provides many opportunities to help you prepare for these opportunities and challenges. We've thought of a few opportunities you will have at University where you could use the time effectively and gain experience in a particular field. The emphasis is to encourage you to start thinking about career ideas during the early stages of the course rather than waiting until the final year of Medicine. By doing this, you can develop a well-rounded portfolio to put you in good stead.
